Mārama Symposium

The Mārama: Manuscripts with Memory Symposium, held in 2021, marked the beginning of the Mārama Project’s efforts to bring together experts, archivists, and whānau to explore the rich histories contained within Māori manuscript collections.

This event was pivotal in highlighting the cultural significance of these taonga (treasures) and the importance of their preservation.

During the symposium, participants engaged in a series of presentations and discussions that delved into the challenges and opportunities associated with archiving Māori manuscripts. Experts shared their insights into the unique methodologies required to handle and digitise these historical documents, ensuring their preservation for future generations. The event also highlighted the role of whānau in the archiving process, encouraging them to actively participate in preserving their own histories.

The symposium fostered a sense of collaboration among professionals in the GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) sector and Māori communities. It provided a platform for networking and knowledge exchange, reinforcing the importance of culturally sensitive approaches to archiving. The success of this inaugural event laid the groundwork for future symposiums, establishing a strong foundation for ongoing efforts to preserve and share mātauranga Māori.

The Mārama: Manuscripts with Memory Symposium was a powerful reminder of the need to protect and honour Māori knowledge. It demonstrated how collaborative, community-led efforts can successfully safeguard cultural heritage while empowering those connected to it.
