Mātauranga Māori (a Māori knowledge base) pervades all our work here at Te Kura I Awarua. Our projects can work with mātauranga Māori by recording it, helping to define it, archiving it or provide models for others to understand it. Although all our research is grounded in Indigenous knowledge systems, some of this work centres entrirely on Māori ways of knowing, being, and doing, highlighting the role of mātauranga Māori in shaping the wellbeing of whānau and communities and the development of Māori-led solutions in Aotearoa.
The Cultural Safety initiative is committed to fostering equity and inclusivity in healthcare by addressing the specific needs and experiences of Māori (and other underserved communities) in Aotearoa New Zealand. Our focus is on ensuring that healthcare professionals provide culturally safe care, which means creating environments where patients feel respected, understood and valued.
The Health Equity project is committed to addressing the significant inequities in Mōri health outcomes and the challenges that Māori face in accessing healthcare services in Aotearoa New Zealand. By centering the unique experiences and perspectives of Māori communities, this project strives to build a more equitable healthcare system that meets the needs of Indigenous populations.
