This project aims to archive and conserve letters written to Henare Matua (the Henare Matua Repudiation Collection) in the mid to late 1800s. As a leader of the Hawke’s Bay land sales resistance group, the Komiti (the Repudiation Movement), he received communication from across Aotearoa bewailing land loss and fraudulent land sales in colonial times. Their mission was to ‘repudiate’ the frauds and prevent further sales.
This Tipene-Matua whānau-owned collection has been archived (in hard copy), arranged and described, and then digitised, and is now being digitally archived. Dissemination pathways and the writing up of ‘letter-based’ histories are presently being developed with the whānau owners of this taonga.
